You may be looking at getting a hair transplant, but which one will you be getting? There are two main types of procedures to opt for, and although the two methods are quite similar, there is a difference between them and what they can each do for you.

It’s always good to first understand what the difference between DHI and FUE is. Once you have a better understanding of the difference between DHI and FUE, you will be able to make a more informed decision on what you should do in terms of getting a hair transplant.

DHI Hair Transplant Method

DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) is the hair transplant method that is best for individuals who are suffering from hair that is thinning. Another term for this condition is male or female pattern hair loss.

With this method, hair follicles from the donor area are placed between your existing hair units. A full head of hair is ensured by this method, which will leave you with visibly no damage to your scalp or surrounding areas.

FUE Hair Transplant Method

As a form of hair transplantation, FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) works best to fill in bald spots. Under local anaesthesia, hair follicles are extracted from the back of the head using special micropunches and implanted in the bald area suturelessly.

Within 6 months you’ll be able to start seeing the results of your hair transplantation. The results of this procedure will leave you with a fuller and natural-looking head of hair. Only after around 12 months will you be able to see your final results.

Similarities & Differences Between DHI and FUE

Both these two methods are the same in the sense of them both collecting hair follicles from donor areas and transplanting them over to the troubled area. The difference between DHI and FUE is primarily in how grafts are implanted in the recipient site.

DHI uses a special tool called the Choi Implanter Pen, which allows implantation to take place immediately after extraction without the need to first create channels for the grafts during the implantation phase.

During FUE hair transplants the channels must be opened for the surgeon to manually implant the extracted grafts. FUE is a method for collecting grafts, and in this procedure, micro-motor devices are used to remove the hair from the canal.

Which Hair Transplant Method Would Be Best for Me?

Well, it will ultimately depend on what your hair currently looks like, and what you’re battling with. If you have bald patches, then an FUE will be the best choice, but if you’ve only got hair that is very thin then the DHI is the way to go.

The best thing to do is to speak to a medical professional for their opinion. As there are differences between DHI and FUE, they will be able to examine your scalp and tell you exactly what is needed. In some cases, you could be required to get both the DHI and FUE procedure. This could be the case of you being bald on the top of your head, with thinning hair around your crown.
