There are “clinics” in Turkey that are little more than beauty salons. Technicians are allowed to perform hair transplant procedures – but the results will invariably be poor. Many people have travelled to Turkey and found that the low price they paid was little more than bait to get you there. After that, you could be charged for the absolute basics, including a hospital gown, anaesthesia, and necessary medications. You could also find yourself having an operation in a poorly run salon by people speaking a foreign language with few skills.
A hair transplant is AN OPERATION. Okay, you are not having organs removed, but local anaesthesia is used, and your ONLY hair follicles are being transplanted and implanted into your scalp, It requires expert doctors that are also skilled artists with years of experience under the lead of other experts.Â

After we have researched we curate, the criteria used to give a score and a give a recommendation. It’s all very well booking a hair transplant procedure, but it can be a scary business flying to a foreign country to have a medical procedure. What’s going to happen when you get there? We rate clinics for fully describing what will happen from touchdown in an airport in Istanbul until you are safely back on the plane. Who will meet you, and will you go straight to a clinic or the hotel? Following that, what will happen on the day of your procedure? Who will take you to the clinic, and how will the procedure be performed? On the day after, will the clinic coordinators take you back to the clinic to remove the bandages and perform your first hair wash?Â
We rate clinics for detailing your full itinerary. A video is a great way for websites to explain your hair transplant procedures, and we score them accordingly for giving you this information.Â
You may find sites that are happy to offer you a price, but any quote is pretty meaningless without a doctor’s consultation. Unless a qualified doctor looks at your hair and scalp and has some details about your medical background, then it’s not possible to assess whether you would make a suitable candidate for a hair transplant.Â
On looking at photographs, a doctor can then recommend the options open to you, the best method of transplantation, and the number of grafts that you might want or need. We look for a site to offer a consultation form with several questions asking for photographs and preferably offering a free Skype or Zoom consultation.Â
Hair transplants can be performed in various ways; an older method that is still sometimes used to get the highest yield of hair follicles is the FUT method. This is where a strip of your scalp is removed and then sewn up. It’s not the most modern or ideal of methods. A more modern process called FUE, where follicles are harvested one by one has less scarring and a quicker healing time.Â
A more modern technique still is DHI which uses a Choi implanter pen to harvest hair follicles. This method has various advantages, including implanting the hair without having to shave the area where the hair is implanted. It’s important that you know who makes up part of the clinical team. We don’t award points to clinics that offer generic information about “supposed” excellent doctors. We want to see details of the doctors and their experience in hair transplantation on the site. There are many doctors in Turkey that are famous in the hair transplantation world.Â
They may have developed new techniques themselves, and you’ll come across many clinics that have doctors that are the front to the clinic. If that’s the case, we also delve a little deeper for you to see if it’s that doctor who will actually perform your procedure or if they will just oversee it. You may even find details where there is an additional cost for the lead doctor to perform parts or all of your procedure. Most hair transplant clinics offer package deals. Of course, you could book your own hotel, but who needs the hassle. Most clinics will provide the whole deal, which we believe is best as the less you have to organise and worry about the better. However, no one wants to slum it. You want at the very least, a 4-star hotel so you can relax before your procedure and afterwards. With the lira being so weak, you can get fantastic prices for accommodation, so you may as well take advantage of great deals that the clinic can get for you.
Some clinics will even offer you a choice of hotel. We score clinics a point for providing you with a hotel which is at least a 4 star so that you can recuperate in pleasant or luxurious surroundings. Istanbul has some excellent hotels to offer you. You can pick globally recognised brands such as the Doubletree Hilton, Radisson Blu, Marriott, and the Ritz Carlton for complete stress-free choices.
We also award a point for VIP transfer which we consider to be a must. Istanbul is a huge city with international airports. Trying to find a taxi to a hotel or a clinic when you don’t speak the local language is not something we think you should have to deal with. Clinics, in our opinion, should arrange an itinerary with you and have a coordinator and English-speaking driver waiting for you at the airport. The VIP transfer should take you to the clinic, the hotel and the airport and any other sightseeing place you may wish to go to during your time in Turkey.Â
Another aspect we look into which can be the dealbreaker for many people is if there is financing available. Of course, you will get a great deal with a hair transplant in Turkey, but it will still be upwards of Є1000 euros. Not everyone can find that money and so spreading the cost over 12 months or so, makes it a manageable extra Є100 or so a month. An A-license is granted by the Turkish government and is the gold seal of medical facilities. Ideally, the clinic you choose has an A-license, which means it’s regulated by the government and has EU standards for hygiene and facilities. The clinic you select doesn’t need to have this license, but it’s preferable.Â
It’s essential that the best surgeons also use the best tools and equipment to perform your surgery. These tools are of vital importance in getting the best result. With special instruments, surgeons can measure the hair’s density and select the placement of graft more skillfully and naturally. We make sure that the clinics you choose have invested in the most modern and accurate tools for giving you the very best result.Â
Hair transplant procedures may or may not be performed in a hospital. It’s not vital that the procedure is conducted in a hospital; however, ideally, it is. If the clinic is located inside a hospital, you know that you are in absolutely the best place in the rare event that there are complications. If anything were to go wrong in a clinic that is not a hospital, you would be taken by ambulance to the nearest hospital and billed for the expense. It’s obviously better to choose a hospital but not vital. Confusingly some clinics are state-of-the-art and appear to be hospitals, but they aren’t, and they don’t have intensive care facilities.Â
This criterion is far from the be-all and end-all; it just depends on what you want. There are some excellent hair transplant clinics out there that won’t score a point for these criteria. We added it though as lots of people want to have extra work done while having a hair transplant. It can be as little having a crown fixed at great value prices or a cosmetic procedure such as a facelift. If you only want a hair transplant, this is of no consequence to you. However, if the clinic is also performing procedures like these, you can be assured that the clinic is staffed with fully qualified doctors.Â
Under no circumstances should you overlook this criterion in our scoring system. That’s because it’s legal in Turkey for someone who is merely a technician performing what is an operation on you. We carefully check through clinics to make sure that doctors are performing surgeries. Some sites will artfully sidestep the fact that they have no doctor, with clever wording. Under no circumstances should you have a hair transplant unless you are in the hands of a skilled doctor. We make sure we red flag clinics attempting to lure clients with no doctors, and make it abundantly clear what they are offering.Â
It goes without saying that an English speaking team is a desirable factor in a hair transplant procedure. No one wants to be in a situation where you don’t understand what is going on – especially when you are undergoing a medical procedure. Most doctors will speak some English, and if not, they need to provide translators during the procedure, so you fully understand what is going on at all times.Â

We curate scores out of 25 to give an overall score out of 5. A score above 4 indicates a clinic that has ticked a lot of the right boxes and is an excellent choice. A score of around 3 is an okay clinic that is likely safe. A score below 3 indicates a clinic that isn’t getting enough right, and you can probably find a better clinic for your transplant.Â
It’s important to remember that the surgeon can only work with the follicles you have. If you choose a terrible clinic, it’s going to be either costly or virtually impossible to repair the damage done. We do our best to evaluate the clinics with all the information given. You may or may not pay more for clinics that we have given an excellent score to. There is a trend for many clinics to hide their prices until you inquire. To assess if you are getting good value or not a benchmark of around Є0.80 per graft will stand you in good stead. If the price is higher, then fine as long as you are getting an excellent clinic with lots of extras such as a skilled surgeon, 5-star accommodation, a good hospital, and aftercare products. Â
